The Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN) is made up of Associations; Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in ageing, Pension Unions, Retired Civil Servants of all cadre including the Military and other forces, Care Givers and Care Institutions, Advocacy and Awareness groups, Capacity Building on Ageing, Social Workers, Ageing Health and Wellness groups, Geriatric Consultancy, and related professional services, Research and data collection groups, Academicians on Ageing, Culture and Orientations and Youths in Ageing; all groups working with or affiliated with Ageing Issues in Nigeria
Mission To provide a platform for the entrenchment and sustenance of the well-being of Older Persons in Nigeria.
COSROPIN has nine objectives. Prominent are: to protect the welfare and interest of older persons in Nigeria; uphold their rights in accordance with applicable laws and constitution of the country; work towards better health and ageing of Nigeria’s senior citizens; encourage inclusion of older persons in every aspect of Nigeria’s public life; promote research into issues pertaining to ageing; and build bridges within and outside the country with relevant authorities, individuals and institutions dedicated to the care of the older persons.

COSROPIN is the acronym for Coalition of Societies for the Rights and of Older Persons in Nigeria. The Nigerian umbrella organisation and the voice of Older Persons in Nigeria. It is a non-political, non-partisan, not-for-profit made up of Associations; Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in ageing, Pension Unions, Retired Civil Servants such as Association of Retired Federal Senior Public Officers of Nigeria (ARFESPON), Retired Army, Navy, Airforce (RANAO), Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria (ARPON) and Graceful Ageing Fellowship (GRAF) for healthy Ageing and all groups working with or affiliated with Ageing Issues in Nigeria, with the Mission to provide a platform for the entrenchment and sustenance of the wellbeing, welfare and dignity of Older Persons and the Vision to awaken the consciousness of Nigeria, towards promoting and ensuring the wellbeing, welfare and dignity of Older Persons among other things.
In line with the United Nations yearly observance of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day [WEAAD] on the 15th June 2023 with this year’s Theme: “Addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Older Age - Policy, Law and Evidence-based Responses.” the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria [COSROPIN] organized a one-day programme to mark the day, bringing together relevant MDAs and UN Agencies, Senior Citizens, Community Leaders, School Children and Academia to discuss and exchange ideas about how best to reduce the incidence of GBV in Older Persons, the role of Law enforcement agencies, government policy thrust and evidence based responses

The OLDER PERSONS HANGOUT PROJECT is a COSROPIN planned programme of activities conceptualized to bring older persons together at religious centres, communities, halls and event centres, with the help of youths, professional caregivers and volunteers to achieve healthy ageing amongst older persons.

COSROPIN has continuously played it's part in ensuring that Older Persons are not left behind as it has consistently brought into the front burner the issues of Older Persons. In 2020 at the National CSO Strategic Workshop on the SDGs, the Coalition secured the first Vice President position on the Executive board of the CSO Strategy Group on the SDGs in Nigeria and has engaged with the Nigerian Government on the issues of Older Persons.

The Older Persons Rights and Priviledge Bill drafted by COSROPIN was submitted firstly to Senator Dr. Burkola Saraki to be read on the floor of the Nigeria Senate. Sadly, nothing was heard by the Bill

The Coalition was convinced that a legal framework was needed to backup any effort in the advocacy for the care of the elderly. The Coalition set itself the task of coming up with a Bill that would address all the known Rights, Privileges and Issues and Concerns of the elderly.

Finally, COSROPIN came up with Draft Bill proposal - “A Bill for an Act to provide certain Rights and Privilege for Older Persons in order to ensure Health and Economic relief and protection for their Social and Civil Rights and for other matters connected thereto”. This Proposed Bill was formally presented to the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki of the 8th Assembly by the Coalition on the 29th of March 2018, it was earlier given to the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development. At a Public hearing of the Committee. Nothing was heard of the Bill in 2018 hence COSROPIN has in 2019 represented the Bill through a member for team sponsorship
